When it comes to outdoor recreation, Pennsylvania abounds with many opportunities. Fine Gold Prospecting in the Glacial Till
If you live on the North Eastern coast of the US in an area that does not have natural gold deposits, probably the best chance you have to pan gold is in areas where the glaciers dumped their trash. Well, back to “some trash is other people’s treasure,” and that’s what we have with what the glaciers dumped on us. It can give you a chance to try out the gold prospecting hobby near your home before venturing off to a gold bearing region.
In southwestern PA and Eastern Ohio we have an opportunity to go looking for these glacial deposits that are known to contain Fine Gold, Raw Diamonds and small Platinum. All of these are very fun and profitable to find.
How did it get here? Well it really did not have a choice. It was pushed with an unimaginable force from Canada and then dumped in our backyard. In this area we were impacted by at least 3 main glacial periods. The Wisconsian, Illinoian and the Kansan periods came through and left us some fine gold to play with. Most of these 3 periods had numerous advances and retreats, so the maps will give a better idea of where to look.
The best place I have found to get good information and maps is from the US government. They have a great map and information booklets available on there pa web site. It can be found at http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/topogeo/pub/onlinepubs.aspx

The only difference in finding the gold compared to areas that have natural gold deposits is you will probably be dealing with smaller creeks and streams so dredging becomes a “do the best you can under the circumstances.” In looking for the gold in the Glacial areas I have not found much in the grey clay, most is found in the area about an inch from the top of the clay. In looking for a good spot while test panning, the black sand is still the best indicator.
The benefit to those Glaciers dumping their till on us is for those of us that call this home, we get to pan for gold with out having to run off to California or Alaska. If you start your gold prospecting adventures with fine gold, you will become one of the best at recovering any type of gold. When you can pan the concentrate down and recover the fine gold and Black magnetic sand, just imagine how easy it will be for you when you get to a spot that has nuggets that you can pick up with your fingers!
History of Amelia Island Flordia

Local stories and evidences have it that the Amelia Island was first inhabited by the Timucuan Indians and they were here as long ago as 2000 BC. They were strongly committed to one of their customs which is tattooing themselves with black, red, blue and yellow on different areas of their body.
The island was first named “Isle de Mai” (Island of May) by Jean Ribault, the Huguenot leader who landed on Amelia Island in 1562. It is said that on Ribault and his troop’s landing, they were greeted by the Timcuans with baskets of berries. However, knowing that the Spanish had claimed the area in 1513, the fact did not prevent these French colonists from landing as not only were they seeking land for France, but also refuge from the religious and political persecution that went along with being Huguenots. Though Ribault and his company didn’t remain, the Huguenots returned again in 1564. It was this second colony which constructed the Fort Caroline in Northern Jacksonville near the mouth of the St. John’s River. In 1565, Spanish troops came to the area and killed the French settlers for them to regain the territory which they had plotted as their own years before.
With the coming of these Spanish troops, the first Spanish reign tool place, from 1565 to 1763. The mission of Santa Maria on the northern end of Amelia Island in what is now known as Old Town was set up to convert the Indians to Christianity. That time, the early name was changed to “Isle de Santa Maria”.
The following years, the Timucuans of Amelia Island gained contact with the Europeans, and the British settlements in the North soon took a keen interest in the area because of its naturally deep ports and the strategic trade route location. The island was then named “Amelia” by the governor of Geogia, James Oglethorpe in 1735 in honor of Princess Amelia, the daughter of King George II. It is interesting to know that although the island was named “Amelia” by the British, it did not fall into British hands until the Spanish Florida was traded for British Cuba in 1763 as a result of the Treaty of Paris. During the British rule, Amelia Island was known as Egmont.
In 1783, the Second Treaty of Paris ended the Revolutionary War and returns Florida to Spain. It was in 1811 when George J. F. Clarke, a surveyor, plats the town of Fernandina, named in honor of King Ferdinand VII of Spain. However, to drive out the Spanish, the Patriots of Amelia Island, which is an independent group of American civilians backed by the US government, seized control of the Amelia Island and it was that time that they raised their flag. The following day, they ceded Amelia Island to the United States.
In 1870 to 1910, the Golden Age of Amelia Island, several wealthy Americans made Fernandina their home and built elegant Victorian style houses in what became known as the Silk Stocking District. The Egmont Hotel, which was once of the grandest hotels of the times was even visited by Ulysses Grant. It was noted that the boom was due to the shipping industry and the rise of the numbers of New Yorkers who came down by steam boat to enjoy the warm climate and elegant hotels in Amelia.
In modern times, the Amelia Island Plantation was built and is now known as one of the perfect island destinations in the world. Several establishments began to pop up, and now the island is noted for various activities.

Patent Law
Patent Law grants an inventor the right to exclude others from producing or using the inventor's discovery or invention for a limited period of time. U.S. patent laws were enacted by Congress under its Constitutional grant of authority to protect the discoveries of inventors. The main body of patent law concerning patents is found in Title 35 of the United States Code. In the patent law for the invention to be patented it must be novel, useful, and not of an obvious nature. Such “utility" patents are issued for four general types of inventions/discoveries: machines, human made products, compositions of matter, and processing methods. Changing technology has led to an ever expanding understanding of what constitutes a human made product. Specific additions to the Patent Act provide, in addition, for design and plant patents.
Prior to a recent amendment of patent law prompted by the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS) accompanying the Uruguay Round GATT, patents were normally issued for a non-renewable period of seventeen years, measured from the date of issuance. Under the amended provision of patent law (which took effect June 8, 1995) the term will be twenty years measured from the date of application.
There is a patent law with regards to patent infringement. Patent infringement cases arise under Federal patent law over which the Federal courts have exclusive jurisdiction. The Federal agency charged with administering patent laws is the Patent and Trademark Office. Each patent application for an alleged new invention is reviewed by a examiner to determine if it is entitled to a patent. While historically a model was required as part of a patent application, in most cases today, only a detailed specification is necessary.
If an application is rejected, the decision may be appealed to the Patents Office's Board of Appeals, with further or alternative review available from the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, or in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.
In 1975 the Patent Cooperation Treaty is a patent law that was incorporated into Title 35. The United States is a signatory to several major international conventions which permit U.S. inventors to seek foreign patent protection. The most important of these is the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) ratified in the 1970's. The PCT provides for the filing and processing of a single international patent application in a special branch of the Patent and Trademark Office called the U.S. Receiving Office. The PCT process is akin to an "options" contract in which a single application is filed which claims the right to file in over 90 countries of the world. The PCT provides for a preliminary examination procedure which is given weight by regional and national patent offices. International protection must be procured within one year of the U.S. filing date in the case of a utility patent.

For some, it started on a family vacation to some town in the backcountry when to keep themselves occupied for the whole eight-hour drive, their parents or family members must have handed them a copy of Backpacking: One Step at a Time. Or it could be that they’ve been doing it for so long it was hard to remember a time when they haven’t been strapping on boots and walking for miles in the wild outdoors.
Whatever’s the case, one thing is certain: We go hiking for only one reason. And that reason is to enjoy what Mother Nature has to offer.
You always recognize a first time hiker the minute you see him or her approach, hobbling under at least 50 pounds on the back (for a two-night trip!) comprised of a backcountry pack that is the equivalent of the Beverly Hillbillies’ flatbed, a 10-pound tent, a pair of running shoes, a dozen bagels, and lots more watchamaccallits which he insists might come in handy during the trip.
It’s an amusing picture, to be sure, but true for almost every hardened backcountry veteran out there the first time they started hiking. Not to worry though. If you’re one of the newbies to hiking, it won’t take long for you to put enough miles on the boots. As time goes, you’ll find yourself picking up some decent sense of fine-tuning your art along the way, until your pack finally no longer resembles a truck and you no longer carry nearly as many bagels.
In the meantime, here are some hiking tips and advice for you live by before you decide to learn under Experience when your degree from On-the-Trail University.
Have Fun
That’s what hiking is all about. Sure, there are a number of reasons why you put on those boots, but in the end, all of that boils down to one thing – fun. Without that, then it’s not worth it. Who wants to endure so much the hardships of hiking when all they get out of it are countless bug bites and maybe a few scrapes here and there? If it wasn’t fun, would anyone even bother?
So take this advice: have fun. Take your time. Watch a cloud form. Breathe the air. The number one rule in the woods is “No Stress.” Breaking that rule is not an option.
Be Prepared
Just because hiking is fun doesn’t mean that you can forget about safety all together. Remember: this is the outdoors. Anything could happen. Ill-preparedness is the cause of too many backcountry disasters and near-misses. Inadequate clothing, lack of route-finding ability, bad judgment calls – all of these have led to life-threatening situations in hiking.
The best way to be prepared while backcountry hiking is knowing what conditions you’re going into. Once you do, figure out a way to deal with them and pack accordingly. You may also inquire at park management who could give you valuable advice on local conditions and permitting procedures.
Know Your Equipment
Being a trail dork isn’t so bad, especially if your life is on the line. And knowing which insulation your sleeping bag uses doesn’t ruin your “cool” image in anyway if it turns out a storm is brewing and the night is going to be most likely freezing cold.
Knowing your equipment is always a good idea because your gear may well be called upon to save your life one day.

The City Government
Amsterdam, as all Dutch municipalities, is governed by a mayor, his wethouders (aldermen), and the municipal council. The establishment of this system is what sets Amsterdam unique from other Dutch municipalities. The stadsdelen are said to be responsible for a number of activities that previously had been governed and managed by the central city. Fourteen of these have their respective council, which is chosen by a popular election. Westerpoort, the fifteenth, covers the harbour of the city and has very few inhabitants. It is also governed by the central municipal council.
The Language
When it comes to language, many of the people in Amsterdam are proud of the fact that just about everyone speaks English. Although many also speak German and French, it is worth noting that in this capital city of Netherlands, it is a tradition that if you are English speaking, then speak English, unless you speak Dutch too because you are more likely to offend than do anyone a favor by trying out your French or German.
There is a common misconception in the language of Amsterdam; one of those is that Dutch is very close to German. The truth is, they are not mutually intelligible: Dutch people have to learn German at school, and in general they speak better English than German. However, Dutch and German are similar in the same sort of way that French and Italian are similar.
The Weather
In Amsterdam, the typical weather ranges from a little around freezing in the depths of winter to typically pleasant sunny days of 20 to 25 degrees Celsius in the summer. There is also a little snow during the winter season. Furthermore, the spring and autumn are pleasant in Amsterdam; however these seasons can be wet, with 100+ mm of rain per month.
Safety and Health
Amsterdam is a safe city, thus there is nothing really to fear from walking in any part of the city. It has been noted that even in the red-light district around the Oude Kerk, tourists are always spotted wandering around. However, as in any large cities in other parts of the world, you should beware of pick pockets. And, don’t try to photograph the women in the red-light district for that would be risky. In terms of water, the water from taps is perfectly drinkable.
